NAB Pheroze & Noshir Merwanji Rehabilitation Centre for Blind
Mount Abu, Rajasthan
History
Aware of the need for providing comprehensive rehabilitation training to newly blind adults, NAB started a rehabilitation centre for the blind in 1967 at Mt. Abu – a hill station 766 km from Mumbai, in Rajasthan. The Centre was started on a beautiful property comprising a spacious bungalow, some outhouses and about 3 acres of land donated by Mrs. Khoorshed Gharda. The Centre has been named in the memory of the donor's sons.
Activities
Basic Rehab Training
Trainees who enroll at the Centre undergo basic rehabilitation training in orientation & mobility, activities of daily living, personal care and grooming, home management, Braille and communication skills, etc.
Vocational Training
In this section inmates are introduced to craft like making bags, candles, chalk, phenyl and liquid soap, furniture caning, weaving doormats, book-binding etc. The light engineering section teaches them to work on fly presses, lathes, punching and drilling machines besides motor rewinding and other such jobs.
Computer Training
This Centre was started in 2006 with seven computers donated by Satyam Computers. Here, students are taught MS-Office, Internet browsing and sending and receiving e-mail.
Music
The trainees are taught Hindustani vocal and instrumental music and are also introduced to folk music. During the past few years, our trainees have performed at various functions held in Mt. Abu.
Special School for the Blind
This school operating classes from Std. I-VIII is recognized by the Rajasthan Board. Extensive use of Braille, Audio and other educational material is made to impart formal education to the students.
Sports
Cricket is the most favored sport among the trainees. Since 1994 they have participated in various cricket tournaments for the blind.
