NAB Finance Raising Committee

History

That lots of money would be needed to effectively run the activities was known to NAB right from the start and therefore in its initial years itself set up the Finance Raising Committee under the leadership Mrs. Queenie H. C. Captain as the Chairperson and Mrs. Shera F. D. Nanavati as the Vice Chairperson.   FRC team of voluntary workers tapped into a variety of fund-raising vistas like charity premiers of films, Flag Day, social events, stage performances by eminent artists, fashion shows, donations through philanthropic sources, etc., which brought in the much needed funds, thus building a solid foundation for NAB.

The challenges throw up by our ever-expanding activities called for professional approach to fund-raising.  So, 1977 FRC set up the All India Revenue Unit (AIRU) and also appointed a full-time fund-raiser. "Light-a-Light" Matchbox Competitions, Chartered Race Special, "Splash Down" – a sponsored swimming competition, were some very innovative and unusual resource mobilization programmes introduced to augment finances for promoting the organization's mission. Many of these fund raising techniques were later followed by other charities. AIRU's extensive link up with the entertainment industry also did a lot of good to its fund-raising pursuits.  From 1981 AIRU started offering expertise to NAB Branches and other institutions for the blind in India.

Activities

Presently, FRC team utilizes a variety of methods to generate the important resources. Innovation is the order of the day. Our major resource mobilization is carried out through Schools in Mumbai. Even there, innovation is practiced, every year.

We depend on corporate donations and generally aim for long-term partnership. We also enroll them as volunteers for various NAB activities. During the last 2-3 years, we have taken up sensitization of the community. These programmes primarily intended for the corporate sector demystify blindness through simulation. Participants are made aware of the problems encountered by blind persons in their day-to-day life.

FRC plays a key role in organizing the All India Flag Day for the Blind each year on September 14 NAB delegation calls on the Governor to pin the first flag.  Later during the day NAB teams visit other important personalities like the Mayor, Sheriff, Judges, etc.  Fundraising drives and awareness raising programmes are also undertaken.

At the Annual Awards Function held each year in March, FRC felicitates Principals, Schools and students for their efforts in raising funds for NAB.

In partnership with the Round Table India (an NGO dedicated to freedom through education and rural literacy programmes) and Motorsports Association of India, each year in the month of February, FRC organizes a Car Rally in which blind persons participate as navigators. They read out to the drivers the rally route given to them in Braille.
